Troubleshooting
What the plugin's messages mean and what to do about them, where the plugin keeps its files, and the notes your IT department may need.
Messages
Each row starts with what you see, in AutoCAD or in your web browser. The loader's sentences, which appear as AutoCAD starts, are in the table under For IT Administrators on this page.
| What you see | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| "Sign in again: Sync needs an AVstackr sign-in." | You are not signed in, and the Settings tab shows Signed out. Or AVstackr refused the stored sign-in, and the tab shows Key rejected for an API key or Sign-in expired for a browser sign-in. The sign-in window opens. Sign in, then repeat the action. |
| "Your AVstackr role is read-only: the palette shows the project but cannot change it." | Your AVstackr role is Read-only, so every change is refused. The notice appears when you change something. It can also appear when you open or switch to a linked drawing, because the palette then sends the drawing to AVstackr in the background, and that needs a role that may make changes. Ask an administrator to give you an editing role on the Organization page, then sign in again. The notice appears once per sign-in. |
| "Your company needs an active AVstackr plan, or a live free trial with the browser sign-in, for AVstackr to accept the plugin's requests. An API key needs a paid plan: during the free trial, sign in with the browser. Otherwise, once your company has a plan, sign in again." | AVstackr refuses the plugin's requests for projects, blocks and drawings from a company with no paid plan and no live free trial, so a search finds no projects. During the free trial, sign in with the browser: an API key needs a paid plan. The notice appears below the top line as soon as the palette reads from AVstackr, for example right after you sign in with an API key during the free trial. The first time an action you start is refused, such as a search, the notice also appears in a message box and on the command line. This happens once per sign-in. A browser sign-in is refused on the authorization page only once the company has no active plan or trial, as the next row describes. While your company is on the free trial, AVstackr's top bar shows the days that are left, and the Upgrade button beside them opens the paid plans. |
| In the browser: "Your company needs an active AVstackr plan or free trial to use Claude Desktop and other MCP clients. Choose a plan at https://avstackr.com/billing/plans." | Your company has neither an active AVstackr plan nor a live free 30-day trial, so AVstackr does not sign the plugin in. Click Return to application, and AutoCAD then says "The sign-in was not completed: AVstackr answered 'access_denied'." Once your company has a plan, sign in again. |
| "The sign-in was not completed: AVstackr answered 'access_denied'." | The browser sign-in did not finish. Either Deny was clicked on the authorization page, or the page could not sign the plugin in, as in the row above. Sign in again, and click Authorize on the page. |
| "This project version is locked. Create a Change Order to modify it." | The project's active version is contracted. Answers that add equipment are blocked, so make those changes through a change order in AVstackr. Placements, moved blocks and the values the drawing owns still sync. |
| "This drawing is linked to another server / company. Relink it to work with it here." | The drawing was linked while signed in to another AVstackr server or company. Use Drawing link… to relink it as a new drawing of the Units tab's project, or to unlink it. |
| "This drawing's link was removed in AVstackr: relink it as a new drawing or unlink it." | Someone removed the drawing in AVstackr's Drawings view or from a Drawings tab in the palette. Relink it, and its placements come back at the next sync, or unlink it. |
| "A drawing that may be this file is already linked: Drawing1, 2027 test plan. Linking again creates a second drawing." | The link window found a drawing of the project made from this same file, for example because this file is a copy made with Save As. Click Cancel to leave this file unlinked. Click Link only when this file is a different drawing that needs its own link. |
| "Remove the drawing link and 9 placements? Units are not deleted." | The Drawings tab's Remove link… asks this first. Yes removes the drawing and its placements from the project, and the units stay. No changes nothing. |
| "Unplace MNT-001 from Drawing1? The unit stays in the project." | The Drawings tab's Unplace… asks this for a unit of the open drawing. Yes removes the placement and the block's link, and the block stays in the drawing as a graphic. No changes nothing. |
| "Unplace MNT-001 from Drawing1? The unit stays in the project. The next sync of that drawing places it again unless its block is erased." | The Drawings tab's Unplace… asks this for a unit of a drawing that is not open. Yes removes the placement only, because the block in that file still carries the unit's link. To take the unit off for good, open that drawing and erase the block. |
| "That drawing is no longer linked to the project. The list has been reloaded." | Someone removed the drawing in AVstackr's Drawings view or from a Drawings tab in the palette while your palette listed it. The Drawings tab now lists the project's drawings as they are. Nothing was changed. |
| "That unit is no longer placed on the drawing. Its placements have been reloaded." | Someone unplaced the unit in AVstackr, or from a Drawings tab in the palette, before your action reached it. The Drawings tab now lists the drawing's placements as they are. Nothing was changed. |
| "Sync failed: Finish the LINE command first: AVstackr changes the drawing only between commands." | The plugin does not write to a drawing while one of AutoCAD's commands runs in it. Finish or cancel the command, then repeat the action. |
| "Sync failed (network): …" | AVstackr could not be reached, or did not answer in time. Nothing was queued and the drawing was not changed. Sync again when the connection is back. |
| "Another change reached AVstackr at the same moment, so the drawing is synced again." | Someone else changed the project while your sync ran. The plugin syncs again by itself. Check the Review tab. |
| "Signed out. Restart AutoCAD to connect to …" | The server was changed, and sign-in stays off until you restart AutoCAD. Until then, the Settings tab shows the restart banner, and signing in with AVS_SIGNIN ends with "Restart AutoCAD to connect to …" on the status line. |
| "AVstackr is not loaded." | The plugin is installed but did not start. As AutoCAD started, the command line said "AVstackr could not start: …" with the reason, and the log has the details. When AutoCAD started on its Start tab, that sentence is in the first drawing you opened. Fix the cause, such as a mistyped server address in settings.json, and restart AutoCAD. |
AutoCAD answers AVSTACKR with Unknown command | No plugin version was loaded, so the plugin's commands do not exist. Check that ApplicationPlugins\AVstackr.bundle\PackageContents.xml exists and that you let AutoCAD load the plugin's files. Then read the loader log, which says what the loader found and what it loaded. When the loader ran, it also left one of its sentences on the command line, and the table under For IT Administrators explains each one. |
| "Could not check for updates: …" | Check for updates could not reach AVstackr or could not read its answer, and the reason follows, such as "the server did not answer within 10 seconds". Check the server in the Settings tab and the network, then check again. |
| "Could not check for updates: Updates are only installed from an https server or the local network." | The server in the Settings tab has a plain http address outside this computer and the local network. Use its https address. |
| "Updates are off: this copy was not installed from the bundle" | This copy of the plugin was not installed from the zip, or it runs from a folder that is not an installed bundle, so it has nowhere to put an update. Install it from the zip as Install and Update describes. |
| "The update could not be downloaded: …" | The download failed, for example because the connection dropped, or AVstackr announced a file on another server. Nothing was changed. Click Update plugin again. When the sentence goes on "AVstackr redirected the download to …; sign in again or check the server.", sign in again, and check the server's address in the Settings tab. |
| "The download did not match what the server announced; nothing was changed." | The file that arrived is not the one AVstackr announced: its size or its SHA-256 fingerprint differs. Click Update plugin again later. |
| "The download holds an unsafe path and was refused." | The update holds a file that would land outside its version folder, so the plugin refused it before writing anything. Keep the version you have. |
| "The download holds no net10.0 build of …." | AVstackr announced a build for your AutoCAD that the download does not hold. Nothing was changed. Keep the version you have and check again later. |
| "The update could not be written to …" | Windows refused to write the new version folder, for example because the bundle is in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\, where a user without administrator rights cannot write. The running version is not affected. An install there updates only by installing the new version as Install and Update describes. Otherwise, click Update plugin again. |
Files and Logs
The plugin keeps its files under %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\: settings.json, the encrypted sign-in, downloaded blocks in blocks\, and the log in logs\. The log is one file a day named like avstackr-2026-10-12.log, kept for 7 days. Open cache folder in the Settings tab opens the blocks folder, and Open log the log folder. The log records each request to AVstackr with its status and duration, and every error. It never records a token, a key or what a request sent.
The loader writes its own log, one file a day named like loader-2026-10-12.log, also kept for 7 days. It records the version folders the loader found, the version it loaded, and why it fell back to the previous version or refused one. It is always in %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\logs\, even when settings.json moves the plugin's log elsewhere. Open log then opens the plugin's log folder, not the loader's.
For IT Administrators
This section is for the person who manages AutoCAD's security settings and installs software on your company's computers.
Each Windows User
An install in %APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\ belongs to one Windows user, so each user installs the plugin for themselves. Each user also signs in separately. The sign-in is encrypted for that Windows user, and the plugin's files are in that user's own %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\.
Settings You Can Set in Advance
The plugin reads %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\settings.json when AutoCAD loads it. A setting the file leaves out keeps its default, and a file that cannot be read gives every setting its default. The file holds these settings:
| Setting | What it sets | Default |
|---|---|---|
serverUrl | The AVstackr server the plugin signs in to. | https://avstackr.com |
liveSync | Whether edits of placed blocks are sent as they happen. | true |
refreshSeconds | How often, in seconds, the palette updates the drawing from AVstackr while it is shown. 0 turns that off. | 60 |
cacheDir | The folder for downloaded block files, in place of blocks\. | %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\blocks |
logDir | The folder for the plugin's log, in place of logs\. The loader's log stays in logs\. | %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\logs |
The plugin writes the whole file again whenever someone changes a setting in the palette.
Network
- The plugin sends its requests to the server set in
serverUrl, over https forhttps://avstackr.com. That includes the update check and the update's download. - Library block files are downloaded from links that AVstackr gives the plugin, each valid for 15 minutes. A link may name a file-storage address other than the AVstackr server. The plugin's log records each download's address without its signed query.
- The browser sign-in ends at an address on this computer only,
http://127.0.0.1, on a free port the plugin picks. The plugin listens on that address alone, so nothing outside the computer can reach it.
Trusted Locations and SECURELOAD
SECURELOAD is the AutoCAD setting that decides whether AutoCAD loads code from folders that are not trusted locations. AutoCAD loads the plugin's loader, AvEngineering.AutoCad.Loader.dll, and the loader loads the plugin, AvEngineering.AutoCad.dll, from its version folder: Contents\net8.0\versions\…\ in AutoCAD 2025 and 2026, and Contents\net10.0\versions\…\ in AutoCAD 2027.
Instead of answering AutoCAD's question at the first start, you can add %APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\AVstackr.bundle\Contents\... to the trusted locations in OPTIONS → Files. The \... at its end makes the entry cover the version folders inside Contents, and an entry without it does not. With SECURELOAD set to 2 the entry is required. When only the loader's folder is trusted, the loader refuses the version folders and says "AVstackr … was not loaded: … is not a trusted location (SECURELOAD 2). See the loader log." When the loader cannot read SECURELOAD, it acts as if SECURELOAD were 2 and trusts only the Program Files folders.
Installing under Program Files
The loader trusts C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) with all their subfolders, as AutoCAD does, so an install in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\ needs no trusted-location entry. AVstackr has not yet run the plugin from that folder.
- As a user with administrator rights, extract the zip into
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\, and check thatAVstackr.bundle\PackageContents.xmlis directly inside that folder. - For each newer version, close AutoCAD, delete the old
AVstackr.bundlefolder and extract the new zip the same way, again with administrator rights.
A Windows user without administrator rights cannot write there. Such an install therefore cannot update itself: Update plugin ends with "The update could not be written to …", and each newer version is installed again as the steps above say. Removing such an install also needs administrator rights.
Copies Not Installed from the Zip
A copy of the plugin that does not run from an installed bundle shows "Plugin … (development build)" in the Settings tab, and its update badge says Updates off. Such a copy never updates itself, because it has no bundle to put an update in.
Where an Update Goes
An update downloads the zip into memory and writes only the new versions\…\ folder inside the bundle. No updates\ folder exists under %LOCALAPPDATA%\AVstackr\AutoCAD\.
How the Server Tile Decides
The Server tile says Unreachable when the last request could not reach AVstackr, timed out, or got an answer of 502 or above. An update check that gets no answer within 10 seconds is an exception. The plugin itself stops waiting, so only the update badge says Check failed, and the tile does not change.
The Loader's Messages
The loader is the part of the plugin that AutoCAD loads first, and it starts the newest installed version of the plugin. It writes these sentences on the command line as AutoCAD starts, and its log, described under Files and Logs on this page, says more.
| What you see | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| "AVstackr: no plugin version is installed; download it from https://avstackr.com/docs/autocad-plugin" | The bundle holds no version folder with the plugin in it, so nothing was loaded. Install the plugin again as Install and Update describes. |
| "AVstackr … failed to load; running … instead. See the loader log." | The newest version could not be loaded, for example because AutoCAD's question about it was answered Do Not Load or its file is damaged, so the previous version runs. AutoCAD asks again at the next start when the answer was not Always Load, so restart AutoCAD and choose to load it. If the sentence comes back, install the plugin again. The loader log has the reason. |
| "AVstackr … failed to load. See the loader log." | No version could be loaded, so the palette and the commands are missing. Install the plugin again. The loader log has the reason. |
| "AVstackr … was not loaded: … is not a trusted location (SECURELOAD 2). See the loader log." | SECURELOAD is 2, and the version folder is not a trusted location. Add %APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\AVstackr.bundle\Contents\..., with the \..., to the trusted locations in OPTIONS → Files, and restart AutoCAD. |
| "AVstackr could not start its loader: …. See the loader log." | The loader stopped on an unexpected error before it loaded the plugin. Install the plugin again, and keep the loader log, which has the details. |
