Line Item Attributes

Capture serial numbers, MAC addresses, firmware versions, and other per-unit data on any line item — without bloating the catalog.

What It Is

Every line item in a project's Details page has an Attributes column on the right side of the table, just before Delete. Click the chevron in that column to expand a panel where you record key/value pairs — one row per piece of data. The keys you can choose from come from a tenant-wide list you curate in Global Project Config; the values are free text.

Use this when you need to track:

  • Per-unit serial numbers
  • MAC addresses
  • Firmware or software versions
  • Calibration or warranty dates
  • Anything else specific to the physical units in your project

The Attributes column sits on the right side of the line items table, next to Delete. The badge shows how many attributes are saved on that line.

One-Time Setup — Define Your Keys

Before you can add attributes to line items, define the keys (the labels) that will appear in the dropdown. This is a one-time setup per tenant.

  1. Open Settings → Global Project Config.
  2. Scroll to the Line Item Attribute Keys section.
  3. Click Manage Line Item Attribute Keys.
  4. Type a key name (e.g. Serial Number) and click Add key or press Enter.
  5. Repeat for every key you want available. Use the up/down arrows to reorder them — the order here is the order they appear in the dropdown on line items.
Deactivate vs. Delete

Deactivate hides a key from the dropdown for new entries but keeps existing entries intact (they display with a "(deactivated)" suffix in italic grey). Delete permanently removes the key — but only if no line item is using it. If the key is in use, deletion is blocked with a count of how many entries reference it; deactivate it instead.

Adding Attributes to a Line Item

  1. Open any project's Details page.
  2. Find the line item you want to annotate. Click the chevron in the Attributes column.
  3. The panel expands beneath the row. If this is the first time you've opened it and the line item has a Quantity of 3, you'll see 3 blank rows pre-seeded — one per unit you'd expect to record.
  4. For each row, pick a key from the dropdown and type a value. The entry saves automatically when you click out of the field (autosave on blur — no Save button).
  5. Need another row? Click + Add entry.
  6. To remove an entry, click the red ✕ on its row.

The pre-seeded rows are a one-time hint

The first time you open a panel on a line item, the system pre-creates blank rows matching the Quantity. After that, it remembers exactly what you saved — opening again later shows just your entries, not extra blanks. Change Quantity later and the system won't re-seed: add rows manually as needed.

Per-Unit Attributes (Line vs. Unit tabs)

When a line item has a quantity greater than one, the attributes panel shows a row of tabs: a Line tab and one tab per physical unit (Unit 1, Unit 2, …). This lets you record something specific to each physical device — a serial number, a MAC address, an asset tag — instead of one shared value for the whole line.

  • Line tab — attributes that apply to the line as a whole (the original behavior). These belong to the version, so they copy forward when you branch a revision.
  • Unit tabs — attributes for one physical unit. A unit's serial number is a fact about that device, so it stays with the project as a single source of truth — it does not fork when you make a new revision, and it's the same whether you view it here or from the device's rack.
  • Same device on two lines. If the same make and model appears on two lines in one room (say Qty 3 and Qty 2), they share one pool of five units — opening either line's tabs shows all five.
  • Lowering the quantity never deletes a unit's data. A unit beyond the current quantity is flagged with a ⚠ and can be removed deliberately, so a serial you typed is never lost by accident.

You can also enter a unit's attributes from its rack drawing: open the device's properties window, pick which unit it is, and its attributes become editable right there. See Rack Elevations.

Behavior Notes

  • Same key, multiple rows. Adding three "Serial Number" rows for a Qty 3 line item is normal and expected — one per physical unit.
  • Blank rows aren't saved. Seeded rows you don't fill in are discarded when you collapse the panel. Nothing is persisted until you pick a key and the field loses focus.
  • The badge counts saved entries. When the panel is collapsed, the number next to the chevron is the live count of saved entries on that line.
  • Clearing the value doesn't delete the entry. Empty values persist. To remove an entry entirely, click the red ✕ on its row.

Permissions

  • Editing the master key list (in Global Project Config): any user except ReadOnly.
  • Editing per-line-item attributes: any user with project edit access. ReadOnly users can expand the panel and see entries, but every input is disabled.
