Display Sizer

Calculate recommended display size from closest/farthest viewer geometry. Designed for conference rooms.

Overview

The Display Sizer analyzes two viewer positions against one display location and returns a recommended size, conflict status, and placement output.

Before beginning you must set the scale.

The Drawing Measure ribbon, with the Scale button in the TOOLS group used to calibrate the plan

Scale, in the ribbon's TOOLS group. Once the plan is calibrated the title bar shows the resulting scale.

Where the controls live

Title bar — file commands and the drawing's link:

  • Open - Load a floor plan image (PNG, JPG)
  • Save - Save current drawing state
  • Load - Load a previously saved drawing
  • Export - Export as PDF or image
  • Scale readout - Appears once the plan is calibrated. Until then the tools that need a scale stay disabled and say why on hover

Ribbon — everything that acts on the drawing:

  • TOOLS - Select, Pan, Scale, Measure, Draw (arcs and rectangles), and Sizer
  • ANNOTATE - Text for notes, the Multileader button and its style tiles for leaders with text, a tag bubble, a built-in or DXF symbol, or an arrow only, and the Dimension menu for Horizontal or vertical and Any angle dimensions
  • OBJECTS - the Objects menu for pre-built equipment, the Custom menu for imported DXF objects, and Copy Equip to copy the placed equipment list to your clipboard
  • MODIFY - Move, Align V, Align H, Center Z, Align Plans and Clear All
  • VIEW - Plan or Sheets
  • PLAN - Floor or Ceiling; dimmed while you are in Sheets

Right dock (PANELS) — four palettes in one rail, each with its own header and its own fold. The fold is remembered per browser and never changes with the selection:

  • PROPERTIES - the selected object's properties, and the Duplicate, Delete and Deselect buttons. The header names what is selected — the model, or "3 selected", or "none" — so a folded palette still tells you what you are editing
  • LAYERS - Canvas labels, Annotations, Electrical, AV devices, Underlay, Underlay B&W with the Fade slider beneath it, Floor/Ceiling Underlay with the Ghost strength slider beneath it, and the 2' x 2' Grid row. Its header counts what is shown — 2/8 shown — and turns amber while anything is off, in every state: palette open, palette folded, and the whole rail stowed to its edge. Below the Grid row, the Annotation defaults section sets the drawing's Text size and Label size (see Layers on the Drawing Measure page)

Over the canvas — the zoom controls: −, the current zoom, +, and Fit to frame the whole drawing.

  1. Click Sizer in the ribbon's TOOLS group
  2. Step 1: Specify display center point
  3. Step 2: Specify closest viewer position
  4. Step 3: Specify farthest viewer position
  5. Step 4: Set Wall Width: Set starting point
  6. Step 5: Set Wall Width: Set ending point

The wall width measurement constrains recommendations to displays that physically fit on your wall. If no constraints exist, you must still specify step 4 and 5 for reference. In the example below, 4 and 5 (not shown) would be specified by selecting the edges of the display niche. This would limit the recommendation to fit the niche.

Setup steps Steps 1-3

Single Display Mode:

  • Min Adequate (orange) - Minimum width from farthest viewer using Adequacy HFOV (default 20°)
  • Max Comfortable (green) - Maximum width from closest viewer using Comfort HFOV (default 36°)
  • Recommended - Geometric-mean compromise, snapped to supported sizes (43", 50", 55", 65", 75", 85", 98", 110", 136")
Geometry Conflict

When Min Adequate exceeds Max Comfortable, no single display satisfies both constraints. The tool flags this conflict and offers a Dual Display Mode solution.

Dual Display Mode:

When geometry conflicts occur, switch to Dual Display Mode for a two-display solution:

  • Vertical Adequacy - Uses 6H (minimum) and 5H (preferred) height rules per display
  • Per-Display Comfort - Maximum width per display is limited by Dual Comfort Threshold (default 45°)
  • Comfort Bands - Green (≤50°), Yellow (50-55°), Red (>55°)
  • Head Turn Warning - Alerts when head turn angle exceeds 35° between displays
  • Bezel Gap - Configurable gap between displays (default 1")

Dual Display Size Results Explained:

  • Minimum (6H) - Per-display minimum using Height = FarthestDistance ÷ 6
  • Preferred (5H) - Per-display preferred using Height = FarthestDistance ÷ 5
  • Maximum - Per-display maximum from closest-view comfort threshold and wall-width constraints

Visualization:

  • Green cone - Comfort zone from closest viewer (what they can comfortably view)
  • Orange cone - Adequacy zone from farthest viewer (what they need to see clearly)
  • Purple line - Screen plane where the display(s) will be mounted
  • Dual rectangles - In dual mode, shows two side-by-side displays with bezel gap
  • Blue wall markers - Shows measured wall width constraint

The cones, the recommended displays, the markers and the labels zoom with the drawing like every other object, and they print: the Floor Plan (PNG) and Floor Plan (PDF) exports and the sheets show them as they appear on screen. The sizer's labels print at the drawing's Label size. The viewing-zone map drawn under the sizer is a planning aid for the screen only: it shows in Plan view and never prints.

Apply Button

Once satisfied with the recommendation, click Apply to convert the analysis into actual display objects:

  • Creates real display object(s) using the recommended size and model (e.g., Samsung QM65C)
  • Positions displays at the analysis location, oriented toward the farthest viewer
  • In dual mode, places two displays side-by-side with the configured bezel gap
  • Applies the current Display AFF (Bottom) value to placed display object(s)
  • Removes the analysis overlay, leaving placeable/editable display objects
  • Display objects appear in elevation preview and can be exported

Vertical Check (Closest Viewer)

The analysis panel includes a vertical pass/fail indicator based on the closest viewer and current placement settings.

  • Display AFF (Bottom) default: 48"
  • Eye Height (AFF) default: 44"
  • Vertical limit: 30° to top of image
  • PASS when atan((TopAFF - EyeAFF) / ClosestDistance) ≤ 30°

Current Defaults

Setting Default Where Used
Comfort HFOV (closest) 36° Single mode max comfortable width
Adequacy HFOV (farthest) 20° Single mode minimum adequate width
Dual Comfort Threshold 45° Dual mode max per-display width
Bezel Gap 1" Spacing between dual displays
Display AFF (Bottom) 48" Applied to placed display object(s)
Eye Height (AFF) 44" Vertical closest-view check

Standards Note

Use the tool outputs as a design aid. If your project requires a specific formal compliance method, validate against that method using the project’s final content assumptions and seating geometry.
